About Dennis Minty

Dennis Minty approaches photography through his life-long love of nature. “I think that outstanding photography communicates through the eye to the heart and brings new awareness, respect and awe for our amazing world. I take pictures as an expression of my personal connection with the water, sky, land and life that surrounds me. With camera in hand, I feel most connected with the outdoors and very aware that we are all part of, not separate from, nature.”

Minty’s path to professional photography has taken him through 30 years of both local and international work as an award winning wildlife biologist and environmental educator; designer and manager of a nature education center; author of both educational and photographic books and CD-ROMs; multimedia developer and adventure tour guide. One of his environmental education projects, a multimedia CD-ROM entitled “Finding the Balance, Environmental Issues on a Global Scale” was officially endorsed by the United Nations. Amongst the other acclaim Dennis has received for his work are the Living Rivers Conservation Award from the Quebec Labrador Foundation and the Canadian Governor General’s Medal.

Although Dennis travels widely, his favourite place is his home, Newfoundland and Labrador. “This is one of the great undiscovered pockets on earth. My hope is that we can continue to share it with the broader world yet, while doing so, ensure that its heart and soul are retained.” He gives his time freely to issues that concern him, such as the unsustainable forest practices that threaten places like Newfoundland’s Main River Valley. While working in the Provincial public service, he designed, set up and managed a nature education centre, Salmonier Nature Park; trained over 600 teachers in environmental education; supervised the operation of the province's seabird sanctuaries and helped lead Newfoundland/Labrador in the protection of its most important natural areas.

Dennis has authored or co-authored five books and two educational CD-ROMs. One of his books, Wildland Visions, Newfoundland and Labrador, is a photographic tribute to his home province, and another, Wildflowers of the Rock, is an intimate exploration of some of Newfoundland’s wildflowers and berries. He has also co-authored three school, textbooks that are used in Newfoundland/Labrador and the Atlantic Provinces.

His photographic collection now numbers about 60,000 images from Newfoundland/Labrador, elsewhere in Canada, Caribbean, Africa, Seychelles, Iceland, Greenland, Scandinavia, and Europe.
